About The Author
Dr. Lum Heap Sum holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bachelor of Laws from the University of London and a Master’s degree in Economics (Labour) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia . Dr. Lum earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration from Open University Malaysia, with performance management being his area of expertise. Dr. Lum had his early years of HR career at The Hong Leong Management Company (the management arm of a local conglomerate) as Group Human Resources Executive before moving to Gamuda Berhad to assume the post of Human Resources Manager.
His consulting career started in year 2000 whereby he performs the role of a confidential agent to corporate leaders in managing their most important asset, i.e. human capital. Dr Lum, provides practical solutions to corporate clients in respect to strategic management of human resources, including legal management of people, performance management, organisational design, and talent management. Dr. Lum believes that the management of human resources should be uniquely aligned to the creation of value through the enhancement of human capital readiness.
The eminence quality of Dr. Lum’s reputation is evidently clear from his appointments as Independent Director, Chairman/Advisor of Remuneration Committee, Member of Audit Committee and other advisory positions at the Board level in several public companies listed in Bursa Malaysia. Besides his Boardroom experience, Dr. Lum assumes the role of de factor Human Resources Director/Chief Value Officer (CVO) in a number of local companies, as well as Multinational Corporations (MNCs), while commissioning the role of personal confidant to distinguished corporate figures. Dr. Lum’s knowledge of the Malaysian labour laws is undoubtedly evident from his astounding record of successive victories at the Industrial Court. As well as being a very much sough- after guru in the same field among human resources practitioners in Malaysia.
In recognition of his knowledge in the field of performance management and reward system, Dr. Lum has been appointed by Open University Malaysia as its Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Compensation Management, a subject taught at the post-graduate level (MBA and MHRM) at the same University. At the international scene, Dr. Lum was the Managing Director and co-founder of Greater Munich Area Sdn Bhd, a Malaysia-German joint venture (JV) company representing the interests of participating Universities of Applied Sciences located within Germany’s Greater Munich Area in disseminating technical knowledge to the industries in Malaysia.
Dr. Lum is the founder of “HR Clinic by Dr Lum”, a platform which provides confidential advice and pragmatic solutions to employers and employees in relations to workplace isues He is is the author of “Simplifying the Employment Act 1955” and “50 Shades of Resignation”; the two books which present the subject matters in simple, practical and fun ways.
